Vaccine speeds have picked up again in June. Even now, however, only 15% of the country's population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has removed the condition of trial of several foreign vaccines in India. The decision is expected to speed up vaccination further.

On the other hand, the government claims that 216 crore vaccine doses will be available in the country by December. In the meantime the people of the country will have the option of 8 vaccines. However, at present only Covacin, Covishield and Sputnik-V vaccines are available in the country.

What is the current status of vaccination in the country?
Currently, only two vaccines are being used on a large scale in the country. The covacin is made in the country, made by India Biotech, while the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from Britain is being made by the Covishield Serum Institute in India.

Russian vaccine Sputnik-V was introduced in India by Dr. Reddy's is building a lab. However, the vaccine is currently only available in a few private hospitals. It is rumored to be available everywhere soon. DCGI's decision has paved the way for vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna to arrive in the country. If we talk about the country's vaccination program, more than 250 million vaccine doses have been given so far.



Which foreign vaccine can come to India?
The Government of India said that vaccines included in the Emergency Use Listing listed by the US Regulator USFDA, EU Regulator EMA, UK Regulator UK MHRA, Japan Regulator PMDA and WHO will be given Emergency Use Approval in India.

At present, only Johnson & Johnson vaccines are approved in the United States, along with Moderna and Pfizer. Thus, in addition to these three, the AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved in the European Union. Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines are given in the UK. The only Pfizer vaccine in Japan. The WHO has so far approved only four vaccines - Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Synoform and Synovac.



These include Pfizer, Modern, Synoform, Synovac and Johnson & Johnson vaccines that we do not use there. This vaccine can get emergency approval in India. However, approval of the Chinese vaccine Synovac and Synoform may be hampered.

What is the status of vaccines that have already arrived in India?
Oxford-AstraZeneca is the first foreign vaccine to be approved in the country, being used in India under the name Covishield, with an Efficacy of 71%. The vaccine has been approved by the WHO, the UK Health Care Board, the European Medical Union and many other countries around the world. In many countries it is being sold under the name Covishield and in many places under the name Waxgevaria. The Pune-based Serum Institute of India in India is building it.

Russia's Sputnik-V is the second foreign vaccine to be approved in the country after Kovishield. Sputnik-V was approved by Russia for emergency use in August 2020. This is one of the world's first approved vaccines against corona. The vaccine was approved for emergency use in India in February this year.

The first batch of the vaccine reached India in the first week of May. Indian pharmaceutical company Dr. Reddy's Lab is making it in the country. The first dose of the vaccine was administered on May 15 in Hyderabad. Dr. Reddy's senior officer Deepak Sapra took the first dose. The vaccine is expected to gain momentum by the third week of June. Like Covexin and Covishield, this is a two-dose vaccine. Both doses contain two different types of viral vectors.



Its effectiveness in clinical trials has been 91.6%, which is much better than the rest of other vector-based traditional vaccines. However this vaccine is more effective on weak strains of corona. Russia's single-dose vaccine Sputnik Light may also be approved in India soon. If that happens, it will be the first single dose vaccine to be used in India.



How long is it possible for other foreign vaccines to arrive in India?
Pfizer-Bioentech is the world's largest vaccine and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies. This mRNA based American vaccine may arrive in India soon. The company is in talks with the Government of India. It is hoped that the vaccine will reach India by July. Between July and October, 50 million doses of the vaccine could reach India.

The company is stuck with the ADAT (indemnity) clause. The company does not want to sign this clause. This will not be the company's responsibility for any future side effects of the vaccine. However, the matter has moved forward after the Foreign Minister's visit to the United States. Government sources say the deal with the company is in the final stages. The vaccine may be available in India by August as soon as it is finalized.

Pfizer's vaccine has been approved in the United States, Britain, Canada, Brazil, Israel, Australia, Japan and Singapore. This mRNA based vaccine is considered to be very effective. This is also a double dose vaccine. The two doses have an interval of 21 to 28 days. Another specialty is that the vaccine is also given to teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18. If it comes to India, it could also open the way for children to be vaccinated.

Moderna can also get approval
Moderna also has mRNA based vaccine like Pfizer. This vaccine is in worldwide demand. The vaccine could be manufactured in India in partnership with Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla Moderna. The modern vaccine is expected to arrive by early next year. Moderna’s EFC is 94%.

Johnson & Johnson
is the first foreign vaccine to be approved in India. Johnson & Johnson is expected to be the first to be available in India. The company has entered into an agreement with Biological E, a Hyderabad-based company. Like Sputnik Light, this is a single dose vaccine. J&J vaccine trials have proven to be 66% effective. The vaccine will be among the fastest available vaccines after the government's decision. Biological E has the potential to be 600 million doses a year. The United States recently approved the vaccine for use there.

What is the problem with the Chinese vaccine?
The WHO approved the Chinese vaccine synoform on May 7. About a month later one more Chinese vaccine was approved. On June 1, the WHO approved Synovac. Vaccines approved by the Government of India for direct approval in India. It remains to be seen whether India will allow both vaccines.

Is there any hope that any other vaccine will come to India?
The Serum Institute, which is making Covishield, is trying to produce the American vaccine Novavex. It will be sold in India under the name Kovovex. This is a protein sub-unit vaccine. But there is a problem with the use of this vaccine. In fact, it has not yet been approved for use in any country in the world. The company says it hopes to get emergency approval for the vaccine's use by July. The efficacy of this vaccine has been 94.6% in the initial clinical trials. However, in the new results of the trial, it is considered to be 90% effective. The protein technique by which this vaccine is made is considered to be one of the safest techniques.
